Blogs are an exciting way to reach out to a large online audience. It should be noted that blogs are one of the best ways to gain traffic to your website. By maintaining a blog you can:

  • Keep a journal / personal memoirs
  • Share experiences / learnings
  • Promote and educate people on your business
  • Build a community
  • Perform online marketing campaigns

There are no hard and fast rules to follow for blog writing. The topics you write about are a matter of personal choice. Some people even write in blogs as a way to help themselves learn a new subject, much the same way we take notes in school. Here are a couple of truths or best practices that I can share with you.

Valuable Content – Most online searchers stumble upon blogs in order to quench their thirst for information. Start with a blog that revolves around your strong points. Share your knowledge and expertise with the average online reader by writing quality content that you are confident writing about. You’ll gain trust, credibility, good will and even some good karma!

A ‘Killer Opening’ – Your title or email subject heading has a huge impact on whether people click into your article. Your lead paragraph will then determine whether your blog visitors read on or not. Twitter’s 140 character maximum has emphasizes and encourages the need to learn how to write really strong headlines, something that media and PR professionals have been practicing since before social media became ubiquitous.

Example: “Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories. The first story is about…”

The quoted text above is from the 2005 Stanford Commencement Speech given by Steve Jobs (Apple Inc. CEO). This sort of opening is what qualifies as a ‘killer opening’, something that will create a genuine interest in wanting to know more. If you are still feeling a bit clueless about what to blog about, here are a few tips to get you started:

The bottom-line is that you can write on anything and everything under the sun, as long as it serves a positive purpose. It will require some dedication when it comes to maintaining your blog schedule but the benefits of maintaining a blog are very real, especially from a business growth perspective.

  • Keep a journal / personal memoirs
  • Share experiences / learnings
  • Promote and educate people on your business
  • Build a community
  • Perform online marketing campaigns
    • Focus on a Niche – You can focus on specific niche areas and start blogging about it. The more niche your blogging subject is, the more likely you’ll be found by people who are genuinely interested in that particular topic.
    • Daily Experiences – Sharing your daily experiences with the online world can be therapeutic in some ways. Visualize blogging as a ‘punching bag’ and pen down your emotional turbulences for the world to read. You can build up a loyal blogger base by posting on a frequent basis over issues that bother you or lifetime experiences that you would like to share with your reader. There are people who have written with their hearts on their sleeves and shared some pretty personal stuff. These blog articles can be some of the most popular posts because people really relate on a deeper level. (Sorry, I’m not at that that point yet)
    • News Stories – You can share local, national or international news that resonates with your views and opinions. News stories are popular in search engines so being a source of current information can increase the number of your blog readers.
    • Traveling Experiences – We all love to explore new places. You can describe your travel experiences and share useful travel tips to your blogging audience.
    • Motivations – There are a lot of people out there looking for answers to problems they may have. Surfing the web from the safety of their homes is a common thing for people who may be down in the dumps and looking for help (We've all been there). If you have helpful advice or experience, you might decide to give positive, inspiring tips for people to try and overcome bad situations. This may be both a release for yourself, or a gem of information for readers looking for positive influences in their lives.
